The three are distinct strength sports; Bodybuilding focuses on muscle hypertrophy and aesthetics, emphasizing symmetry and muscle definition. Powerlifting centers on three main lifts—squat, bench press, and deadlift—aiming for maximum weight lifted. Weightlifting involves the snatch and clean and jerk, focusing on explosiveness, technique, and strength. Each has unique training methods and goals. It is important that you know these sports often overlap depending upon the athlete and their overall goals. For most athletes they will gravitate toward the sport they are most comfortable often depending upon genetics and athleticism. Weightlifting being the most athletic, bodybuilding being the most lifestyle driven and powerlifting be the least of both but also requires consistency and years of discipline to be very successful.
